What’s the Hype ?

So, when this app was launched, it creates a Big hype among folks that it will tell you that you are infected from COVID-19 or not and that’s certainly not true. To know why, we need to understand how it works.

How it Works ?

So, first of all, Its just an android application. It is nowhere near to some testing machine. Moreover we don’t have enough sensors on our smartphone to test a person is infected or not. So what does Arogya Setu do then.

Well, It basically uses a pre-programmed chat system which provides options to choose. It then according to your choice tells you if you are infected or not. – Basic Computer Science

Now to tell if an infected person is near you, it uses Bluetooth and GPS services of your smartphone. Bluetooth works in a small network known as Personal Area Network (PAN). So whenever an infected person is in the range of your Bluetooth device, it will tell you about the infected. This will only work when the infected person has the symptoms according to the Arogya Setu app. That means, if the person isn’t registered in the app, the app is if of no use. Moreover, GPS is also used to tell about the person by mapping the difference between the live location of two people or smartphones on Google Maps. GPS could also be used to warn users about certain Red Zone Areas where the risk of infection is severe.

Is it worth it ?

In my opinion, it is somewhere worth using and somewhere not. As we know, how it works and there is nothing advance in it to protect us. We can instead follow the country-wide lockdown and if you want you can check the symptoms here. Well, It’s a great Initiative by the GOI and hope we will get through this.
