Tryhackme – c4ptur3-th3-fl4g

In this walkthrough, we will be going through c4ptur3-th3-fl4g room by Tryhackme. This room covers the decoding of the most common encoding algorithms that we come across in a CTF or pentest scenarios. Along with, extracting hidden information from audio tracks and images. So, let’s get started.

Task 2 – Spectrograms

Question 1 – Download the file

Start with opening the file in Audacity. If you don’t know, where to find it, download it from here. Moving on, open the file in the software and then click on the small black triangle that is beside the track name “secretaudio”. Then, select the option “Spectogram”, this will display our flag.

Task 3 – Steganography

Question 1 – Decode the image to reveal the answer.

In this task, we will start with downloading the image and firing steghide on it, which will extract a text file “steganopayload2248.txt” that contains our flag.

Task 4 – Security through obscurity

In this task, we will find the strings that are hidden within the target file by running the given command below which gives us our required flags.

Conclusion

So that was it. Summarizing this room, we first started with decoding some encoded strings using Cyberchef. Further, in the next task, we get our flag by applying the audio file using a technique called spectogram. Moving on, we extract some stegno text from the image using steghide. Finally, we get our final flags using the “strings” command to view the hidden strings in a binary file. On that note, i will bid a goodbye but remember always to “Hack the Planet”.
